Eventually a product will reach the end of its life and will be thrown away, right?

What if this concept could be turned upside down?

OceanPositive is part of a solution to reduce the amount of global waste by collecting it from oceans or preventing it from getting there in the first place, and feeding it back into production cycles.

Last year, over 64,000 tones of fishing net was recovered from the ocean – approximately 10% of the total lost, but thanks to initiatives like:

World Animal Protection’s Sea Change Project

The Ghost Fishing Project

Ghost Nets Australia

Project Ghost

NetWorks

these amounts keep increasing

For a personal story from Karim and Heather Hamza of Los Angeles Underwater Explorers, of collecting the nets at technical diving depths off the coast of California, check out their video onterview. Fourth Element sponsors The LAUE team.

Increased efforts are being made to prevent the nets ending up in the sea on the first place.

Thanks to NOAA’s Marine Debris programme, NetWorks and, closer to fourth element’s home, harbourside collection bins in many major fishing ports, thousands of kilograms of net are collected for recycling at the end of their useful life.

ECONYL® yarn is made by Aquafil – an Italian company which has developed an ingenious process to recycle nylon fishing nets (and other nylon waste) back into First Grade Quality nylon yarn, which we use to create OceanPositive.

The Manufacture of ECONYL® yarn enabled Aquafil (in 2013) to:

ELIMINATE
WASTE

12,600 Tons

SAVE
OIL

70,000 Barrels

AVOID
CO2

42,000 Tons

SAVE
ENERGY

865,000 GJoules

These savings are a comparison with making virgin nylon. In 2015 Aquafil saved enough energy in the production of ECONYL® yarn to power a small town for a year (or the city of Rome for ten days).
